Battlefield Park, New Bern

May 5, 2020

I flew into NC the last night to spend time with the family.   I have been missing being able to come home and I am thankful that I had the chance this week to do so.

We have spent the last two nights sitting by the fire talking about the world we are currently living in, making s’mores and corn hole.  S’mores every night this week.

After the girls had homeschool this morning we all got ready and went for a little nature walk to the New Bern Battlefield Park. I had no idea that this place existed until today. Not sure how that one has gotten past me.  Kelsey and I looked up some park that are close by that where still open that we could all get out and stretch our legs and get some fresh air.

We walked several of the loops I learned a few new things about the Civil War battle that took place right here in New Bern which has left me wanting to research a little more on the town and history and find out if they do Civil War reenactments here in town.

The trails along the earthworks or ‘redans” were very well done and easily walkable.  The trails are each marked along the way with signs and plaques talking about the battle and the lead up to it and about the generals.   We easily walked and took our time with two young girls and it took us about an hour and a half to walk most of the paths.

Since today is the 5th we decided that homemade tacos were in order for Cinco De Mayo. Delicious veggie tacos they were then once more to end the evening sitting at the backyard fire for you guessed it s’mores.

the mounds/earthworks are the redans that were made to help conceal and protect the soldiers.

Where every you may be I hope that you are able to get out and enjoy the fresh air and spring that is happening here in North America.
